Dan, as usual, is a fountain of CS wisdom. In his interesting essay, why can't a--- read? (unicode), he explains why I've been seeing weird characters at work when web-browsing, and in doing so provides some insight into the mysteries of character encoding. I switched my browser from "View/Encoding/UTF-8" to "View/Encoding/Auto-Select", and now all is well. Thanks Dan!
